Spring Roll Restaurant in Winnipeg, Manitoba

img_8473 For a few years now, whenever we crave Chinese food when we are in Winnipeg (which is often enough since we are only 5 hours away), we’ve been going to Delicious Vegetarian Restaurant. Don’t get me wrong, we still love Delicious Vegetarian, but Chinese food cravings have just met their match in the form of Spring Roll Restaurant! Granted, the restaurant is not fully vegetarian or vegan so it can’t possibly be my favorite, but the amount of veg food available at Spring Roll is mind blowing!!

img_8476I had seen comments on the Winnipeg Vegan Facebook group (I just love Facebook groups for discovering vegan and vegan friendly restaurants these days!) promoting their favorite dishes  at Spring Roll so we visited a couple weeks ago. At first I was like, hum… I wonder what all the hooplah was about this place since there are only a few vegetarian things, typical in all Canadian Chinese restaurants. When the waitress came I told her the recommended items that I was seeking and couldn’t find on the menu. She said, oh! you want the vegetarian menu? Yes PLEASE! Ask for the Vegetarian Menu!!

img_8480The hardest thing about eating at Spring Roll Restaurant was choosing what to eat out of about a hundred options! I’m serious, the vegetarian menu alone was 5 to 6 pages! Since it was our first time, I ordered basically what was recommended to me. We had the Jumbo Breaded Vegetarian Shrimp to start. These were unlike any other vegan shrimp I had ever had. Usually, the teture is too hard and not stringy or flaky at all. These were the polar opposite! They were flaky, soft yet very shrimp-like and the breading was a little crispy yet flaky. So delicious!!

img_8481Next, we had the Sweet & Sour Gluten Balls which were supposed to be like your average Chinese Chicken Balls. Let me tell you, these did not disappoint! My husband, who is not vegetarian or vegan, was kind of upset that I wouldn’t let him order the dead chicken balls. However, after trying these, he did not miss the cruelty balls. The sauce was the perfect blend of sweet and sour with pineapple and the texture of the balls, apparently very chicken-like with no associated cruelty. They were crispy on the outside and tender inside. Bouyah!

img_8482Finally, we had Singapore noodles with mung bean which were a little too spicy for my taste but my husband loved them. Oh yeah, we also had spring rolls but I forgot to take a picture. They were your typical crispy veggie rolls containing cabbage and carrots and served with plum sauce.

The service at Spring Roll was much friendlier than most Chinese restaurants and left us wanting more. You could tell that a lot of the customers frequenting this restaurant were regulars and I can see why. I can’t wait to return to try more vegetarian items! Perhaps I will have the Deep Fried Tofu with Peanut Sauce, the Steamed Vegetable Dumplings or the Vegetarian Beef with Ginger & Green Onions… So much to choose from!!
